Torremolinos is situated some 6 km from Malaga International Airport on the Costa del Sol, Spain
Holiday makers looking for culture or architecture will be disappointed with Torremolinos, but their appetites can be wetted by traveling a few miles inland to some of the many unspoiled towns and villages of the Costa del Sol. As a holiday resort, Torremolinos has a great deal going for it, give it a try, you may come to love the place as much as the thousands who return each year.
The area contains numerous evidence of prehistoric settlement. as well as the presence of the Phoenicians, Romans, but it wasn’t until the Moorish inhabitancy that the area took on a certain importance, the famous Pimental look out tower and nume rous windmills which are spread throughout the town from which Torremolinos gets it’s name date back to the 14th century.
Historically tourism came to Torremolinos in around 1930 when George Langworthy converted his home into tourist accommodation and it has been known since then as Castillo del Ingles the Englishman’s Castle.
The development of the tourist industry in Torremolinos has been through several stages, it truly started in the 1950’s when many hotels and apartment blocks sprang up. However it was In the 1960s that the real boom came to this area, with thousands of hotels and bars stretched along its sea front which cater for all taste s and budget.
Torremolinos has undergone a facelift over the last couple of years or so with more than a thousand trees and vibrantly coloured flower beds planted though out the town.
Torremolinos’s coast covers more than 6 kms and is divided into six beaches: Los Alamos, Playamar, Bajondillo, Carihuela, Montemar and Del Saltillo, it’s beautiful beaches and warm temperature make it a perfect location to enjoy the numerous water sports.
The Romeria de San Miguel, an open air festival held at the end of September is rightly recognised as being one of the best on the Costa del Sol, Spain.
Torremolinos is also fortunate to be surrounded by some of Costa del Sol’s finest golf courses, namely Parador Golf, Guadalhorce Golf, Torrequebrada Golf, El Candado Golf and Anoreta Golf all only a short drive.
