When deciding on schooling for your children there are a number of questions you need to ask yourself, do you want your children to enter into a Spanish state school (escuelas publicas) or a private or international school (escuelas privadas),How long do you plan to live in Spain, what age are your children and at what stage is their educa tion level.
Many long term expatriates choose to put their children into Spanish schools, in fact both my children are in Spanish school and after a short settling in period they are all comfortable and progressing at a steady pace. By enrolling into a Spanish school they will learn the Spanish curriculum and the children will learn the language at an accelerated pace and will become accustomed to the Spanish culture quicker. The education standard of Spanish schools is increasing all the time and the workload for pupils exceeds that of the UK in some instances.
Private schools also follow the Spanish curriculum with the exception of some international schools which follow the UK curriculum, these are fee paying schools and most will offer boarding on a weekly basis for the pupils. Spanish private schools are generally taught in the Spanish language, International schools are generally taught in English with comprehensive lessons in Spanish forming part of the curriculum.
Spanish school holidays are normally Easter, Christmas and a long summer break of 3 months. School hours are generally 9 till 2 or 3, but these vary from region to region. The school year is normally from mid September to mid June
