How to apply for a Residents permit

How to apply for a Residence permit:

How do you go about applying for a residence permit? Remember what you read in the chapter on “Before You Leave”, because you will need that Social Security Form E-121 now if you are an EU citizen.

  • · EU Citizen: If you are coming to live a pleasant retirement in Spain, not to work, you will need the following papers.

Proof of enough income to support you. Any EU Social Security pension will be acceptable as a minimum income.

Evidence of medical insurance. Form E-121, which you obtained from your home Social Security office will allow you to transfer to the Spanish system for medical care.

If you do not have EU social security, you will have to contract a private medical insurance with a Spanish company, or an international company which has permanent offices in Spain. Present the policy and one photocopy.

    Passport and one photocopy.

If one spouse is financially dependent on the other, you must present your original marriage certificate and one photocopy

Translation not necessary in some areas but necessary in others. Ask locally

    Four passport-size photos.

You will need to obtain Form 750, take it to the bank, and pay a fee of six euros when you apply

    The filled-up form.

Non-EU Citizen: Now you will need that visado de residencia which you obtained from the Spanish Consulate in your home country before you came to Spain to settle. Obtaining the visa gave the Spanish authorities a chance to check you out, along with your financial means, even before you arrived.

In addition, you will need:

  • · Proof of financial means. European citizens can be accepted to live in Spain without working on minimum financial means but non-EU persons will be required to show higher incomes. No specific figure is set but you ought to have more than 700 per month coming in or you will never get the visa.
  • · Certificado de Antecedentes Penales (Certificate of Criminal Record). This certificate shows that you have no criminal record. You will need this in order to obtain the visa. You can request this from your local police authorities. Ask the consulate in your home country for proper form.
  • · Medical certificate. Necessary for obtaining the visa.
  • · Consular inscription. This a letter from your own nation’s Consulate in Spain showing that you are registered with them.
  • · Medical Insurance. Your private medical coverage must be contracted with a company which has an office in Spain.
  • · Passport and photocopy.
  • · Marriage certificate and official translation.
  • · Three passport-size photos.
  • · Payment of fee in differing amounts, depending on your country of origin. The fee is not high.
  • · Statement from your Spanish bank showing that your income is arriving from abroad and being deposited in Spain.
  • · Title deeds to Spanish property or a rental contract, with photocopy
  • · Birth certificates of children under 18 if they are included in the residence application. Translations.
  • · The filled-up form requesting the residence permit

BE ADVISED: To pay the small administrative fee for Form 750, you must first obtain the form, then take it to the bank and pay the fee. All European Union citizens pay the same six euros. Other nationalities pay at differing amounts. The bank returns to you the form stamped as paid. If you can obtain the form from your police station beforehand and pay it in advance, you will save yourself waiting time. If you can’t, ask for the form as soon as you arrive, take it to the bank, and then join the queue.

Try to find out in advance just what you will have to present. We try to keep this book up to date, but some offices may want four photos instead of three, for example. Well-organised offices will actually give you a list when you make your first inquiry

If you are not an EU citizen and are requesting the unified work permit/residence permit, you will have a number of other documents to present, relating to your employer in Spain, or the money you are bringing in to start a business.
