Chris Wood leads Welsh Open - Costa del Sol Golf.

Chris Wood Leads Welsh Open.

Chris Wood Leads Welsh Open.

Chris Wood, last season’s Rookie of the Year on the European Tour, could be the next uncapped player to throw his hat into the Ryder Cup ring.

The 22-year-old from Bristol leads the Wales Open after a record-equalling opening round of 65, six under par, on the same Celtic Manor course where October’s match takes place.

Six of the current top nine in the points race do not have a cap between them, but Wood has already shown what he can do by finishing fifth in the 2008 Open as an amateur and then third at Turnberry last July.

He was also unbeaten on his Britain and Ireland debut against Continental Europe in the Vivendi Trophy that followed - and his last three finishes have been third, fifth and sixth.

After the disappointment of a closing 77 when leading the BMW PGA at Wentworth two weeks ago the 6ft 5in golfer, able to commute from home across the Severn Bridge, hit back with six birdies in a flawless display.

Yet Wood, who ended day one in front of Welshman Bradley Dredge and Australian Andrew Dodt, is not ready yet to declare the Ryder Cup his number one target.

“I would say it’s completely in the back of my mind,” he said. “It’s not been a massive goal of mine, but I know my game is capable enough of playing at that level.

“I’m just looking to win now. Obviously I’ve started to get myself in contention more often, so the more I do it the more likely it’s going to happen.

“I’ve just got to stay patient - and play good golf.”

The best of his birdies came at the 439-yard eighth, his 16th, where he struck a nine-iron out of a fairway bunker to five feet.

Last week’s Madrid Masters winner Luke Donald, at ninth in the world the highest-ranked player in the field, managed only a four over 75.

But leading local hope Rhys Davies, the player he pushed into second place in Spain, is very much in the hunt again following a 67.

Dredge finished second in this event three years ago, albeit on another of the courses at the resort, and after his round pointed out an additional advantage of playing on home soil.

“I actually prefer it when I get out and there’s more friends and family in the crowd,” he said.

“I feel like if I hit it in the rough there’ll always be someone there to kick it back out … only joking.”

Ross McGowan, currently fifth in the cup standings just behind Donald, was five under with four to play, but lost a ball on the driveable 15th and, after double-bogeying there, dropped further shots at the 16th and long 18th for a one-under 70.

On the same mark were Spanish Open champion Alvaro Quiros, thanks in a part to a hole-in-one on the 189-yard third, and cup captain Colin Montgomerie.

Those two were playing together and it was another opportunity for Montgomerie to admire the 27-year-old’s immense power, an asset he believes could be really useful against the Americans in four months’ time.

Simon Khan, back in action after his life-changing victory at Wentworth, sank a 35-foot putt for an eagle two on the 15th, but played the rest in two over for a 71.

Sweden’s Robert Karlsson takes Qatar Masters title.

Karlsson ends drought in Qatar.

Karlsson ends drought in Qatar.

Sweden’s Robert Karlsson won his first individual trophy for 16 months when he captured the Qatar Masters title.

The 40-year-old Ryder Cup player shot a closing seven-under-par 65, the lowest round of the week, for a 15-under tally of 273 to finish three ahead of holder Alvaro Quiros of Spain (67).

Briton Lee Westwood, playing alongside Karlsson, saw his chance of victory vanish when he three-putted the par-four 16th for bogey.

Westwood eventually carded a 70 to share third place on 11-under with Australia’s Brett Rumford (69).

Karlsson’s last individual victory was at the Dunhill Links Championship in October 2008 before he ended that year with a World Cup win alongside compatriot Henrik Stenson.

He had to sit out four months in 2009 because of damage to his left eye.

“It was definitely a tough four months because I was hoping I had not lost that much but being out for such a long time, the form was horrible when I actually started playing again,” Karlsson said after landing his 10th European Tour win.

“It was hard not to get down on myself and when I was off I didn’t really know where I was. It’s fantastic to win but to play four really good rounds together, that’s the most satisfying thing.”

Karlsson’s victory took him to second on the European money-list behind South African Charl Schwartzel, and back into the world’s top-20.

Quiros had mixed feelings despite finishing his title defence with a run of three straight birdies.

“I am very pleased with the way I played today but then at the same time I had chances and didn’t take them,” said the Spaniard.

Westwood let his frustration with a replacement driver boil over at the 16th when he missed the fairway ahead of his three putts, having started the hole one stroke behind Karlsson.

Last year’s European number one started the week with a new set of irons but suffered on Saturday when the face of the driver that earned him two wins last year cracked.

“It’s hard to imagine anything else going wrong this week so 11-under is an unbelievable score,” said Westwood.

Desert Springs on the Costa del Sol Golf.

Desert Springs Golf.

Desert Springs Golf.

Desert Springs on the Costa del Sol Golf is the first and only desert course in Spain and in fact Europe.

The golf course itself is a 18 hole par 72 with an overall length of 5,698m

Designed by Peter McEvoy to full USPGA specifications. Desert Springs was opened in 2000 and one of his main features is the many tee positions to make a more accommodating challenge depending on the golfer’s standard.

The golf course is maintained in peak condition by an innovative water recycling system, along with the streams that run through the course, a residual water treatment plant and water from the nearby reservoir. There are over 1 million imported plants from as far as the USA. Overall there is 12 staff just taking care of the environment alone.

The different tees, the strategically situated bunkers and the carefully placed hazards make the Desert Springs golf course one of the most challenging golf courses in Spain. There are different grasses for the Fairways, Tees and Greens and all these can be grown on site, even the practice area is lush with perfect grass.

The fairways at Desert Springs Golf are wide and each hole is different, making each round here an authentic pleasure. Dry riverbeds, streams, water channels, rocks and a wide variety of cactus plants add to the attraction on a course that is suitable for amateurs and professionals alike, especially when big competitions take place here. The contrast between the areas of play and the rough is especially spectacular.

Desert Springs as with most championship golf courses require a high degree of concentration and precision to conquer. Braun alone with almost certainly come a cropper here.

Eventually there will be two golf courses at Desert Springs on this site where Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone made “A Fistful of Dollars” and a host of other western films. It is not that Desert Springs is tough, but it fits in perfectly in this area of rugged sandstone rock.

The quality of Desert Springs was proven when both the English Golf Union and the Welsh Ladies Golf Union chose it as their “Spanish Home”. The Royal Spanish Golf Federation selected Desert Springs to host the Spanish Amateur Open in March 2004

On arrival you will find ample parking and a well-stocked pro shop. There are the usual practice areas and a clubhouse with all the required changing facilities. You can enjoy a drink and a meal after your round and take in the spectacular views.

Desert Springs golf course can be walked but many take advantage of the buggies particularly if the weather is kind.

La Canada Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf.

La Canada Golf.

La Canada Golf.

La Cañada Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf is a golf course that has a great deal of history as being the first municipal course on the Costa del Sol and Spain

Robert Trent Jones did the design of the original nine holes at La Cañada Golf Course which was opened in 1982. Then ten years later the second nine holes designed by Dave Thomas was opened.

As for the golf course itself it is characterised by a variety of exotic trees with fantastic views of the Rio Guardiaro, the Mediterranean and the fabulous Valderrama Golf Course.

La Canada Golf Course is very well maintained with a fine mixture of holes where the par 3’s are impressive and particularly the seventeenth where you play over the water. If that is not bad enough wait until you get to the eighteenth where your drive needs to clear the Cañada ravine from which the golf course derives its name.

However despite this it is not a difficult golf course to play and the other sixteen holes are that much easier.

La Canada golf welcomes all standards of golfers. While you are playing take the time to see how well the design fits in to the landscape and just how much progress has been made since the early days of the local village golfers.

This is a golf course to be enjoyed and well worth a visit if you are visiting the Costa del sol Golf, but it does get extremely busy and locals get preference so visitors need to book in advance.

The clubhouse offers all the amenities with bar and restaurant facilities and large terrace area to enjoy the views. There are excellent changing facilities, pro shop and a large practice area with putting green.

La Quinta Golf on the Costa del Sol Golf.

La Quinta Golf.

La Quinta Golf.

La Quinta Golf is one of the busiest and best , golf courses on the Costa del Sol Golf.

Situated on the road to Ronda, very close to Malaga and just opposite the famous Puerto Banús tourist resort.

It was designed by two Spanish professional players, Antonio Garrido and Manuel Piñero.

La Quinta Golf Course is a comfortable and fun golf course which is suitable for players of all levels, with the difficulty lying in the uneven fairways and the deep bunkers.

There is an 18-hole golf course and another of 9 holes which can be combined to suit the wishes of the player.

The greens are always of excellent quality and considered some of the best on the Costa del Sol Golf.

Since it first opened La Quinta Golf Course has replaced several holes on the original golf course to bring them up to modern standards. A successful round here requires accuracy to avoid the many trees, water hazards and strategically placed bunkers.

However, you will find the whole setup and condition of the course very gratifying and a joy to play.

On arrival at La Quinta Golf Course you will find ample parking facilities and perhaps the best equipped clubhouse on the coast. It offers excellent changing facilities as well as a well-stocked pro shop.

After your round of golf you can enjoy the restaurant or simply enjoy a drink on the terrace and admire the views. You can also get tuition here at the Manuel Pinero golf academy either individually or in group lessons.

It is advisable to take advantage of the buggies on offer at La Quinta Golf in view of the undulating terrain that can be stamina-sapping particularly in the warmer weather.
